Where can I launch my Kayak in Port Isabel?  I want to fish Mosquitas flats area.  There was an excellent location at the old causeway in Port Isabel but its now closed.  I am familiar with Holly Beach.

Not alot of areas to park or launch at to reach that area. last I heard they were giving tickets to whoever was parking by the old causeway.
U could launch from either behind dirt Al's and cross the bay or launch from KOA Park next to the pier in SPI but it's going to be a good paddle across.
I have paddled to South Bay from the general area for the fun of it but the paddle back will kill you, defenitley a rudder is needed...
Holly Beach would be my go to or either North of the convention center right before access .#6 ..
I use to kayak with a pretty good group of guys "team pescadores" and they are pretty good on finding the current launch sites and stuff..
I have not seen them for awhile cuz i have been real busy but i look foward to fishing with those boys soon....

I live on Long Island and the old causeway is definitely off limits now. Too bad! Launching from SPI is a really long paddle, but if you really want to hit Mexiquita Flats and South Bay, consider driving up from Boca Chica and launching near the mouth of South Bay. Then, you're a short paddle to either place.
Good luck!

Since I am not familiar with the launch spot from Boca Chica, my goto launch area will be from the Dolphin Cove  Wink

There is a launch area near MF if you don't mind a little paddle. It is to the North of the Old Causeway. When you get to the gates near the old causeway turn left and follow the burm. At the end is a tidal flat you can park and launch from. I have talked to a few people from PI and they have told me "That area is County Property and is open to everyone."

If I'm not mistaken, I think they blocked the area way before the fence of the old causeway. I tried going about a 2 months ago and right after those condo apartment things, there is a fence that doesn't allow you to get even close to that other fence.

I stayed at Long Island two summers ago and took a drive to the old causeway one afternoon and there was an unbelievable amount of trash all over the place. I told my wife, its just a matter of time before they close this place down. Technically it was closed then but someone decided to cut a section of the fence out to allow cars to fit thru.

My first time out there was about a year and a half ago. I was just driving around looking for a place to launch and while I was driving along the fence, I followed a car and the car just went along the fence and went through the fence where it was cut open. He then drove back along the fence since he was inside and made his way onto the road where the causeway is. I wasn't sure if that was legal so I did what he did and when I got there, there was about 5 cars already parked there fishing the old bridge. I even saw a car drive on the causeway. Pretty dangerous if you think about how old that bridge is.

We fish that area freaquently, there is NO place to launch from other than DC or along that area. You must endure paddeling across the bay. We owe this to a bunch of Ido%^s who decided to make a mess out of the old causeway. I remember picking up a couple of bottles out of the water, soon after everything gets  CLOSED to everyone! We even had an organized clean up of the area in hopes of letting the owners know that we were there to help not just take!  The other part that Ive seen is that mount that comes out in the mid of SB and MF like someone mentioned, just dont know how to get there though.Good luck out there!
