Lynn,

I sent a new letter to the Gov, and anyone else I could think of. I will sending it to USFWS and the CORPS letting them know we want to be heard. Lets keep pushing now that the demand for Gulf shrimp, oysters and finfish will increase with 1/3 of Gulf fishing closed because of the oil spill to our East.

I am writing you for assistance to the Save the Cedar Bayou foundation. I have been a public servant since I was 17 yrs old. When I enlisted in the US Air Force. After six years of Active Duty I returned home to San Antonio and joined the San Antonio Police Department. I have been serving the City here for over 20 years and am ready to retire soon. During the last 7 years I became a licensed captain and currently have a fishing business in Rockport. I have become involved with such programs as Heroes on the water and the wounded warrior ride. I have also become interested in the Save the Cedar bayou foundation. This organization has been diligently working on getting permits to dredge and reopen Cedar bayou in Aransas bay to provide a fresh influx or Gulf water to Aransas bay, mesquite bay and Vinson’s slough. This pass to the gulf has remained closed by man. It has adversely affected the inflow of fresh water to the bay system and is depleting the area of food sources for game fish, oysters, whooping cranes and other species living in the area.

With the gulf oil spill to our east and one third of the gulf now closed to all fishing, Texas is going to be the main source of Gulf fish, shrimp and oyster production.
We desperately need the pass reopened to help us prepare for the increased demand from our bays.
A good example of opening passes was the construction of the Packery channel near Corpus Christi, prior to its construction the Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay were suffering from elevated Salinity levels causing a reduction in the fish and shrimp populations and an increase in the dreaded Vibrio bacteria. It is generally spread through contaminated water supplies by poor sanitation; these are the conditions that are becoming more prevalent in the Aransas bay system. Without the fresh influx of Gulf water to filter the bay water as occurred naturally these conditions will continue to cause severe health and environmental problems to the residents of the middle Texas coast.

From one public servant to another and fellow outdoorsman I ask you for your assistance in getting the permits needed to go forth with reopening Cedar Bayou.

Thank You
Andrew Hernandez
