October is one of my favorite times to fish, the air temperature is starting to drop along with the water temp, the crowds are getting thinner, it makes for a much more pleasant and productive time to be on the water.
Many of you know that The Hunt for Reds in October tournament was on Sunday, so we headed down Thursday night to do a little scouting. What a great excuse to fish for three days. All I know to say for those that didn't make the tournament, you missed a great time. This was their tenth anniversary as a tournament, but their first appearance in Texas, but they were pretty certain they'd be back next year, so keep an eye on their website for information.
http://www.huntforreds.com/These guys do a great job at putting on this event, and I'm sure it will just get better with time. They go to great lengths to release all fish turned in and according to the host, they have had great success in that area.
Friday we launched at Cove Harbor and headed across a bumpy Aransas Bay, as we approached the shoreline I began to look for that normally apparent line where the murky water meets clear, and unfortunately I didn't see it. The water wasn't muddy, but a little cloudy all the way to the grass, not optimum conditions for sight fishing but nothing we couldn't work with. We had a couple of areas in mind that were very shallow, but should be accessible with the bull tide everyone had been talking about recently. Fortunately for us, the first spot of the day held a good number of fish. No, we couldn't see them, but they made their presence known on the first cast. And for the next hour or so we caught fish pretty regularly on any bait we threw, the cold front coming prompted a feeding frenzy that we just happened to be in the middle of. We were fishing in about a foot of water throwing it right on the edge of the grass.

Saturday we decided to head south and have a look at Nueces Bay, and while fishing for fun it would have made for a disappointing day, we eliminated it as a tournament day spot rather quickly, we did catch a couple of fish mid morning, it was simply too muddy to fish. We were off the water by 1:30 knowing we wouldn't return there on Sunday.

I decided on a game plan for tournament day, we would just repeat what worked on Friday. We went back to our fish and they cooperated, we caught redfish non stop from 7:15 to 9:30. I lost count, but only two of them had multiple spots with the most being 5 spots. When we finally decided to head in we were the fifth 5 spot fish turned in, nothing better than 5 at that point. Then came a couple of six's, seven's, and an eight. With us turning in the fifth fish, that put us at 10th out of 202 anglers, a long way out of the money... But it was a great weekend regardless, I met some good people, hung out with good friends, had a couple of successful days on the water, and contributed to a good cause, who could complain about that?
