This month will be Speckled Trout "Gap".

Scoring will be the total inches of your largest trout minus the total inches of your smallest trout. The person with the largest gap wins.

Example: Large Trout is 28", Small Trout is 10", your score is 18".

The fish do not have to be caught on the same day.

Undersized fish are allowed so post what you got and upgrade/downgrade later.

In case of a tie, the fish that were posted first, wins.

Pictures -
You need to submit a picture of the fish on or next to a legible tape measure or bump board.

The picture needs to include a bare jig head, no plastic, just the jig head. No dates will be required as the jig head will be proof that the picture was taken during February.

Pictures must be posted by midnight on the last day of the month.

Tails, pinch them if you want to, position them how ever you need to in order to get the most length or least length out of your fish.

The fish mouths need to be closed OR the measurements must start from the nose of the fish. PLEASE SEE THE SAMPLE PICTURES IN THE "STICKY" POST. A fish that has been improperly measured will receive a 1" deduct from your score.

All fish caught with fly tackle will have an additional inch added to their score. In lieu of the jig head, the photo must include the specific "Fly Pattern" for the month that identifies that the fish was taken on fly tackle in February.

Please take a picture of at least one of your fish with you holding it so that it can be placed on the home page, it will look better than a fish on a bump board.

I really like this one, great thinking. You should add an inch to the smaller fish for improper measuring. Deducting an inch would help.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Improper measuring will deduct an inch from your score. So a 28" trout and a 10" trout should get you a score of 18" but if a fish is measured improperly, then you will get a score of 17" (1 inch deduct).

The same thing works for the fly rodders, if one of the fish is caught with a fly rod then the inch will be added to the score.

I don't know who contacted you but I would like to donate a $100 Academy gift certificate to the angler who also produces the best release photos for trout over 22" this month.  Remember guys 22" is the magic number, try to throw them back over 22".

OK, Sequoia has asked me to clarify.  I think the best picture can be voted on by the users on TFF after the end of the month.  A one week voting period would be sufficient.  This is only a side pot.  There may be another prize for for February KOTH.

My understanding of the science regarding trout is that males rarely get over 22".  Which means the vast majority of fish over 22" are all females, and should be condidered SOWS.  I prefer to let them go back whenever possible, and we should start enouraging it as well.

Hey JHook, remember I caught that 4 inch trout on a Shamu paddle yesterday,,I shoulda have taken that picture. It would not have counted anyway because it was January. Would have had a huge lead if it was February.

Clarification:

I went back to look at the TPWD report on the lifecycle of a speckled trout.  They seem to indicate that males may not get over 20".  So I will adjust the side pot to include release of fish over 20" instead of 22" inches since they are most likely SOWS.

Chester Moore's 2009 edition of TEXAS TROUT TACTICS seems to also indicate that male trout may not get over 19".  A female trout adds between 100,000 to 200,000 eggs to be released per year of age.  So a ten year old fish, between 28" and 30" long may lay more than 1,000,000 eggs per year.  A 24 inch female (approximately five years old) releases between 200,000 to 400,000  more eggs per year than a twenty inch female( approximately 3 years old) etc.
