Does my daughter have to wear a PFD on kayak?
This is what TPWD says.

Texas PFD Requirements

Children under 13 years of age in motorboats under 26 feet must wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD while underway.
All vessels under 16 feet (including canoes and kayaks) must be equipped with one Type I, II, III or V for each person on board.
Vessels 16 feet and longer, in addition to the Type I, II, III or V for each person on board, must have one Type IV which must be readily accessible. Canoes and kayaks over 16 feet are exempt from the Type IV requirement.
For more complete information, check the Digest of the Water Safety Act.

I think PFD's are a good cheap insurance policy. Unless you can swim good unconscious.

When Daddies drown in front of their kids it leaves a life long scar. When people love others they don't gamble with the water. Please always wear a PFD. Its hard to go fish with others when you are dead.

I never wear a PFD in the yak if the boat is not in the water.

You can get a PFD that you can wear comfortable when yakking. I know children complain about them, even my daughters but I get them the best comfortable lifejackets.  It is worth it to have one on at all times. Losing a loved one is not the same as losing objects.

I actually called the TPW about this and a similiar issue last year. The answer I got was no lifejackets are required for nonmotorized craft. I always carry mine with me but rarely wear it as I find it makes a better back rest.

My other question was concerning lights. Only a single white light is required on a non motorized craft.

And as I am sure most of you know, sunset is not the same as sundown or dusk.

Not too long ago, I recalled  a Dr drowned ,rescued personnel found his yak & found he had a PFD in the yak. In another word, it's no good if you don't wear the PFD while you're on the water. I personally think that it will be too late if you encounter any emergency while on the water to reach for your PFD,let alone to have time to put it on .

When I am on the water in my kayak, I've my PFD on, my VHF marine radio on ,cell phone in a waterproof container, and keep my antennae on for the idiot PBoaters ,just to be safe for myself & try not to go yaking by myself. LOL
