Rey and I

« on: Jan 18, 09 - 02:43:23 PM »

Many of you know that I like to charter guides to teach me something new from time to time.  Saturday, 1-17-09 was one of those days.  I fished with Captain Cliff out of Jim's Pier, AKA Browntoes (by the way he did not charge me, he just wanted to go fishing [next time will cost me for sure and I will gladly pay]).  he has been guiding on the LLM for a long time and, I just wish I had chartered him earlier.  Aside from being a very fine gentlemen, he can catch fish.  Much of our discussion centered on the difference between guides who are passionate about fishing verses guides who can't wait to collect their fee and get their customers off of their boat.  Cliff is clearly not the latter.  It is nice to find someone who truly loves to fish.  I also count Captain Jonny Watts among those guides who are passionate about what they are doing.

We fished exclusively with artificial lures.  Red/White cocaho and Pearl/chartruse Yum minnows were the baits de- jur.  Captain cliff was kind enough to show me a few new tricks on lure presentation in cold water.  He even managed to trick a Sheephead into taking a plastic bait (pearl/chartruse yum).  Here is how we finished off the day.

Thanks for the report. I will be on the water thursday with my mother, brother, and his girlfriend.
Since they like to soak bait I am going to have to find the whiting and let them have at it.
