Okay, I've read about waders and wading boots especially and I'm wondering just how crucial the boots are when wading.  I have never worn boots or waders but my wading experience to a limited area north of the channel at port Mansfield.  I usually just wear an sold pair of tennis.  So am I being stupid? Is it that dangerous?

It's dangerous just because there are sting rays. But boots may or may not help unless you have the rayguards. If your not gonna buy boots then buy the guards and just wear them over your shoes just in case a ray hits. I bought waders to use when it's cold but it also comes in handy because once your done fishing, your clothes are dry..no need to change clothes. Just my 2 cents.

I have a pair of everlast raygaurd boots and chin gaurds and i always where them with my waders to keep dry and safe but if your planning on buying boots and waders take my advice so you wont spend double the money like me. I bought my boots before my wading suit and i bought a size that fit just right well after i bought my wading suit (with socks) my boots didnt fit me anymore so i had to go get some boots 2 sizes bigger. If you havnt bought either one go try on wvwerything as a whole first thats just my opinion.

I waded with tennis shoes since i was a kid with my dad. It wasn't until I discovered these dang internet forums at an older age and looking at the pics of people getting stuck by rays scared the hell out of me. Been using boots with the built in guards for years now. Must be getting dumber with my older age cause I am seriously considering replacing my moon boots with some regular wading boots without guards

Waders and boots are a personal choice down here in the RGV. I have a set of neoprenes and I rarely ever use them down here; but when I head up to the middle coast during cooler weather they are a God send.

If you are comfortable without them go that way, but if you plan on fishing cooler water buy a set.
