I've heard from a number of people once you defrost fish it's not safe to refreeze. And I recently heard you could refreeze it twice; the first time you bag it and another time after that. How true is either and which is safe? Thanks and Tightlines...

I've wondered the same thing. I've heard you're not supposed to double freeze but I haven't heard from a accurate source.

While we are on topic I have another question regarding fish...how long does fish last in the fridge?..not the freezer.

I would not jeopardize my family's health by refreezing ANY type of meats, chicken or fish. Not worth risking it. Give it away if you not cooking it.

Two days in the fridge is all I will do without freezing.  Generally if they are not frozen they are eaten immediately.  Freezing small portions is best 6-8 filets and the trick is to get all the air out and fill the baggy entirely with water then freeze in a solid pack of ice; that way, no freezer burn.

We release all our freshwater trout unless someone asks that we bring them some which is not often.  The saltwater variety, ummmm let's just say they are much tastier with nice firm flesh.

Hate to break the news to you DW, but just about all the meat you buy at any store was previously frozen.   Shocked

Just my 2 cents..once you fillet fish..put them on something metal in the fridge..cookie sheet..etc.  Cover with wet paper towels and you can keep them in fridge about three days>>NO MORE THAN THREE DAYS.  You can keep fish..venison..quail..just about anything..if you use vacuum seal containers ( academy..cabela's//etc).  I have had one since they first came out  they suck out all the air and excess moisture..tastes as good as the day it was sealed.

Well boys, here you go...  It is best not to re-freeze meats.  The fish/meat will usually not be firm but mushy.  If not in water, it also will freezer burn extremely fast if refrozen.  Keeping in the fridge 2 days max, steaks can be 3 but no longer.  Some meats at the grocery store are previously frozen but it usually will say "previously frozen".  Most beef isn't but chicken is a lot of the time.  If I don't have any fresh caught fish, I NEVER purchase it from the meat counter.  It has been previously frozen & is older than I want to know.  I purchase fish from the frozen foods freezer section - "wild caught NOT farm".
