Rey and I

« on: Dec 28, 11 - 08:51:48 PM »

Woke up this morning, dropped my daughter off at daycare, my son off at Grandma's house and headed out to the bay with a good friend of mine.  The plan was to stick to the same strategy that has worked for the past few weeks.  The fish were there but the wind wasn't.  Thank the almighty for trolling motors.  We managed one red and one trout off Mexiquita flats.  We saw plenty of fish including several huge sow trout, but getting them to bite was a different story.  It was so calm and clear that they were very spooky, and did not let us get close enough to make a good presentation before they spooked.

After a couple of hours chasing several large pods of reds and numerous stingy trout we left Mexiquita and went into South Bay.  First stop found us drifting slowly through a huge and thick raft of small mullet.  BLOW UPS EVERYWHERE!  We had more action than we could handle for about two hours straight.  We were not keeping count, but a realistic estimate puts our totals at 25 plus reds and 40 plus trout in about 2 hours.  Sorry guys no cameras on board today.  Our largest trout was probably about 23".  Our largest red was way oversized, but most of our reds were in the 23" range.

The bite was best between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.  Lure de jure = Red and white Kelly Wiggler 4" paddle tail.

Just want to say it was perhaps the most beautiful day I have seen in the past couple of years.  Get out there and fish! Grin

OH YEAH ... forgot to mention, Mexiquita was covered up with black drum as well.  Bunches of them.  If only I had bought some shrimp.

Tried for an encore performance today, but it was not to be.  South bay was covered up with boats, 5 times as many boats as yesterday.  The fish were not there today, or at least they had moved.  Biggest difference was the amount of water in the bay.  We had a foot of extra residual today and it really messed things up.  No current and more water made for a slow day.

I was out in South Bay as well and did not see much action at all.  I took the kids out  at about 11:00 and thought I would hit the deeper channels looking for drum or sheephead for them to catch, but it was dead.  I thought I saw Trey right out side of Mexiquita (west of there befor the entrance of the Port Isabel basin) about 2:30.  It was slow, but some guy was at the $1.00 boat ramp with 15 to 20 huge Sheephead that he caught in (he claims) 45 minutes using live bait at the area where the Minstral boat used to park.
I'm going to try something different today.  It sure was beautiful out there and the kids had fun practicing their casting.
