Rey and I

« on: Dec 16, 11 - 08:40:19 PM »

What you say fool?  You cannot be serious about fishing and hunting on the day a windy norther is blowing in.  Yuppers . . .  I AM SERIOUS!

When I woke up this morning I found out that one of my scheduled court appearances had been cancelled, all I could say was "thank you Lord".  I was be able to go fishing and hunting out on the Lugana Madre.  The weather was not going to cooperate.  I did not have anyone to go with other than the second best fisherman alive south of arroyo city, under the age of 9 and not over 84 pounds.  He goes by the name of Rey Rey.  Luckily, I remembered that Mr. Smith, or as Rey Rey now calls him "Uncle Josh", did not work on Fridays.  Mr. Smith did not have to be asked twice . . . he was in.

We met up in Port Isabel around 11 a.m. and headed out to South Bay with some live shrimp, popping corks and shotguns.  The wind was not that bad, it was only blowing about 30 mph or so out of the North.  It was raining all day.  Rey Rey was not interested in fishing, but Josh and I managed to catch a few trout and reds before we decided to go hunting.  We kept two trout and released everyting else (ceviche for Sunday's Texan's game).

At around 2:00 P.M. we decided to put up the rods and pick up the guns.  We had set up the decoys and we hunkered down next to some mangroves by 2:30.  The duck hunting action was steady.  We had plenty of pintails and managed to limit out on all Drakes/Sprigs in the pintail category.  The redheads were harder to come by but we ended up with a full limit that included two very pretty Drakes.

Rey Rey and our Labrador are already asleep.  They are exhausted.  Mr. Smith, who is a wildlife biologist at Laguna Atascosa Refuge, was a blast to spend time with.  He knew everthing there was to know about every bird and critter that Rey Rey pointed out to him.  I am sorry to hear that he is leaving us to move to Arizona to do some kind of fishery survey on the Colorado river.  Rivers, huh, sorry excuses for a fishing holes compared to coastal marshes and bays.

Thanks for inviting me out today Trey. Adversity amplifies experience and steady ducks keep it fun despite the conditions. Good times. Tell little Rey, next time I'm gonna get more of his candy.

You probably were fishing and hunting in Mansfield with the second best fisherman south of the Arroyo.

Gordon's Bait and Tackle has shrimp , but if you get there late it's all sold out . Early bird gets the shrimp .

Thanks,  I thought the red tide had decimated the shrimp in the bays and shallows. Cheesy
