Rey and I

« on: Dec 10, 11 - 08:00:28 AM »

My son's school let out for the holidays yesterday morning, after they dressed him up for the Christmas pageant, so naturally it was time to get a little fishing in.

We decided to fish out of the dollar boat ramp and hit Mexiquita, South bay and the surrounding areas.  Shrimp under popping corks was going to be our weapon of choice.  My 8 year old son really enjoys live shrimp under popping corks, the whole experience of baiting his hook, popping the cork, and then setting the hook when it goes down keeps him entertained.

The water was perfect, and a light breeze out of the East set us up for some good long drifts across the deeper parts of south bay.  We also had some good drifts though the deeper parts of Mexiquita.  The shrimp worked great and we landed plenty of trout and reds.  We ended up keeping 9 trout and 1 trophy sheephead.  We released all the reds (we just didn't need the meat) as well as three trout in the 22 - 25 inch range.  We had a nice flounder on but it managed to release itself before we could net it, and managed to boat a small flounder in the 12 inch range.

The bite was best between 2 and 4 pm on a strong incoming tide.

CAUTION:  The winter Texan boaters have arrived and they seem to think it is polite to cut in front of your drift and waive.

We (The Captain wife and I..LOL!!) took some guests early Saturday morning before the soup got in..went down the arroyo for a spot where some reds were seen roaming.  Pulled up next to the south bank near a tree in the water...pulled out about 9 undersize reds(14-18 inchers) but no keepers.  Rain and wind hit about 9:30 and headed home.

I guess as I get older, I seem to be getting less tolerant of rude shoppers, rude drivers, rude people in general, and especially RUDE BOATERS!!!  Come on..it is not like we are all stuck on lanes at a free way!!  Most people have skinny water shallow sports, dargels and others!!  Come on don't ruin peoples fishing by cutting in front of them at 7000 RPM!!  Now....have a nice boating day!!  Grin
