I've seen some pretty big trout lately that appear to end up on the kitchen table. Needless to say if its of legal size and quantity then its a personal choice.
Just wondering if most of us do CPR and if so what size trout do you normally NOT KEEP. I'm told almost all trout over 19" are female and capable of releasing millions of fingerlings. I've only been fishing the coast for the last 4 years on a regular basis and I don't keep anything over 22". To be honest I don't catch many that size in the Rockport area. Best CPR was last April a nice 28".

I have a general rule where I try not to kill anything over 22".  Tournaments often require that I kill some big ones to win.  This year, according to my fishing log, I have killed 17 trout over 25 inches, including 6 over 28".  All but 5 of those 17 killed were tournament kills.  The 5 non-tournament kills were lure/gill/unable to revive fish.

According to my log I landed 63 trout over 25" in the last twelve months.  17 of the 63 died and all the others were released.

I'm impressed with your catching ability. But I am more impressed with your CPR number. Tournaments are what they are and you do what you can to compete. Good job.

I don't have a catch rate anything close to Big's (bait chunker haha) but I do try and release all trout over 25 and ask my friends to do so as well. I kiledl a 27 this year as she wrapped around the line, but to each there own if they decide to keep the big ones! I can guarantee a fish kill if he is 30 and 9 pounds or better because that will go on my wall. And replicas to real ... Debate can ensue!

Hey big ... About that time we meet at our honey hole again!

I also keep a running tally of big trout caught 25", and tournament reds caught.  it looks something like this:

Trout tallies

11/4/11  Trout 28" long bar, topwater top dog mullet (released)
11/5/11  Trout 26" west of green near first spoil, red/white cocaho (died tournament)
11/6/11   Trout 33" surfside boca chica jettie / live perch (died tournament)
11/7/11   Trout 25" Jeff Dean's back yard (died gills)

Reds

11/4/11   2 reds over 27" rattlesnake bay, cut mullet
11/5/11   3 reds over 28 inches mouth of the arroyo cut ballyho
11/6/11   1 red over 27 inches bubbas hole, white gulp shrimp
11/7/11    6 reds over 27 inches, red zapper

I have been keeping records for two years now, and it has started to pay off.  For example, at a tournament earlier this year I was unable to do any scouting.  I consulted my ledger and found three entries from the previous year indicating that we were catching fish at a particular GPs coordinate that same time the year before under similar weather conditions.

All we did was go straight to that spot and ancho up, and BOOM the fish were there.  We ended up winning that tournament by a large margin, and nobody else wars fishing anywhere close to us.

It just clicked.... on what makes a good fishermen. Keeping records is what all the best guides have done for years. I realize I have wasted 4 years of good information and at my age I have a terrible memory and will have to start fresh.. Things are going to change effective this weekend, I a going to start a log. I may even open Ankle Deep guide service when I turn 70. Look out Jay Watkins!!

On a more serious note it is nice to see that almost 70% of our members release Trout over 24".

I'm glad to see the number of people that let the big ones go as well! I personally don't hold it against anyone that keeps a fish so long as it's legal, it's their right and none of my business. I personally let them go to do my part in insuring future generations get to enjoy the sport we all love so much...
