There has been a lot of chatter about the maintenance planned for these pass's. I hope to provided you with some imforation that will address those concerns. Thought out the 3 permits, 2006, 2007, and 2009, the following information was in all three. Page 4 of permit; No maintenance dredging is proposed at this time, as it is not possible to estimate trhe details of any future maintenance-future dredging may be along the same alignment proposed in this project, or may be along a completely new alignment or utilize a new cross-sectional configuration. Therefore, any future activity will be prosed either as an addendum to this permit, or will be permitted ubder a new application. Guidance on the best corse of action at that time will be solicited from the appropriate regulatory agencies.
Page 10 of permit; A monitoring program is proposed to evalute the behavior of the project. Based on the monitoring program, adaptive management of the channels will be employed. No maintenance dredging is proposed at this time, as it is not possible to estimate the details of any future maintenance due to the complexity of the hydrodynamic froces at the project site-future dredging may be along the same alignment proposed in this project, or may be along a completely new alignment or utilize a new cross-sectional configuration. Page 35 of permit; The long term sucess of the project wull be evaluated in light of the criteria set froth in section 2 though the monitoring activities. Results of each monitoring effort will be processed using standard procedures and analysis. Monitoring reports will be submittred one month after each monitoring event and will include all collected data, a comparative analysis, and recommendations for maintenance)if needed). At the conclusion of the 5- year monitoring program, a comprehensive report will be compiled that includes a long-term maintenance plan for Cedar Bayou and Vinson Slough.
In ever permit from 1939 until today, this is how it is done. We just won't know how and what these pass's will do until we clean them up. I guess the thought process, wait and see it maintenance is needed. Remember that these pass's stayed open from the 1939 dredge project untill 1956, (16) years, and again from 1959 until 1979, (20) years. So, lets all wait and see what these pass's are going to do before we ask for something that might not be needed are what we will have to do, such as minor dredging. I hope I have answered all of the concerns about maintenance on the pass's. If not please ask and I will answer it as best as I can. Thanks everyone, and lets keep plugging away for those funds needed to open those pass's. Have a great COOL day.

Hi, Lynn.  Thanks for the information.
Can you give us an update on what is going on with the funding for the project?  Is there any hope that the dredging will begin next Spring?

The concerns expressed by some on the maintenance of these pass's has slowed the funding process down. Until we can clear up this issue it will contuine. There has been a question about why should we spend 6.4 mill, only to have these pass's close up again. We won't know how these pass's will react until they are dredged. Once it is done they will be watched very closely and if we see a problem it will be minor in nature and can be fixed fairly quickly. During the monitoring plan that was developed to evaluate and provide a mechanism to better understand the performance of CB/VS hydraulic restoration project. The goal of the monitoring plan is to evaluate the changes to CB/VS over a 5-Yyear period. These pass's change all the time, and they will move to a place to where they will become stable. Dredge first, monitor the pass's, maintenance if needed. I believe once we answer these concerns, the funding will come in and we will be able to start next spring. If we don't get these pass's funded and open, we will again put the 7 bay system, the fishery, wetland, and most importantly, the only wild flock of whooping cranes left in the world at risk again. I believe it is a matter of not if, but when. We all need to get the word out and now you have an answer to the biggest concern. Thanks Neptune, and as always, please feel free to ask me anything and as always I will answer you as best as I can and truthfully.

Good Chilly Morning, I don't know about you but I am loving this cool air. Today I will be posting up several documents. I feel that it is important that people have a tool of knowledge which I hope will be helpful in understanding the process of obtaining the permit to restore CB/VS and why. However, before I do that I would like to take a second to say that the permit, my permit, not the version that the COE posted on line, appears to be used by some people who take snippets of my permit to trash and bash people on internet boards, NOT THIS BOARD. My permit, which has never been posted on line due to the size of it, was complied by the best experts in the world, who spent many hours, days, weeks and years to collect all the data out there, so we could get a better understanding on how these pass's worked in the pass, how we could best restore them today, to avoid costly maintenance dredging, and keep them open longer. The time spent on collecting this data was done by some of the most dedicated men and women who left no stone unturned, at times without pay. Having said that, I would ask that if you have obtained a copy of my permit, please re frame from using it to what you may feel may give you an advantage over someone else. We have the permit, and we must now address the issue at hand, funding. Lets move forward, and look for a better future for us all and the pass's. The world has enough problems, lets not add to them, be kind, be nice and hug your kids. I will though out the day be posting up the information, check back. Thank you, stay cool. Lynn

1995 dredging project was to extend from Mesquite Bay though Cedar Bayou out to the Gulf. Note 4. Permit also authorizes installation of two 24-foot by 14 foot bridges for access across a wetland area. Huh?
