Got tired of my fillet knife and decided to try something different. I took a Tramontina Bolo machete and cut my shape and then used my wicked edge to sharpen it up.

Are there small ones??? LoL I plan to use it for trout and reds. Working edge is 9in long. Worst case I screwed up a $9 chete. I still need to work on the edge but it's better than what I have. It's got a lot of flex so I think it will work on trout. I'm fishing tomorrow so we will see. Oh yea handle has Lind seed oil (sp) I might strip the paint and force a patina later.

I love this fillet knife. I do not have to worry about flexing the blade or anything. I have been down to clean skin on trout and reds with out any flex what so ever.

Lance,

Your knife, from the blade angle/front view, looks like it was "modified" by you. Did you modify it?

Im going to try to answer all the questions, if I miss one I apologize.

I got the fillet knife while I was in Alaska on vacation in 2008. If you contact Chuck at longmerelakelodge.com, he can tell you if he has anymore left. I paid, I think $25 or $30 for the knife but I don't know what they are running right now.

The guy I bought it from had several made by a friend of his because the knives were no longer being produced. Chuck swears by the knife for use on the halibut boats and I have gotten so used to it I can not use any other fillet knife.

Bernie, I have been known to sleep with it under my pillow. Grin J/K I just took the picture there and never really thought about it.

That's because I clean my fillet knife up after every use.  Shocked Just messing with you Marker150.

years ago our tool room guy made some out of old journal saw blades. he would use a broomstick handle cut in half long ways as a handle/grip. didn't look like much but they were good filet knives, had a lot of flex. think i'll give it a try, got to be an old blade around here somewhere.

just a note to you fellows wanting to modify an existing blade.  Beware of too much grinding or cutting on the steel of the blades, you do not want to get the steel too hot.  You will lose the temper of the steel.  I'd suggest some heat stop paste and/or a bucket of water handy.
