I found a rod and reel combo that I'm thinking of using for shark in the surf. I have never tried fishing for shark before and am looking to spend the least amount of $$$ as to not upset the wife.  Cheesy I found this Shakespeare combo at Walmart and Academy for about $50.00. Thinking of putting 80 lb braid on it to see what I can do with it. Let me know if this will work. I'm after smaller 2 to 4 ft sharks. Here is a link to the rod.  http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_11425_-1?N=97010112+4294967153+933739032

Also, what type and size of hook should I use?

you need a strong pole and a bigger baitcast or spinning reel but i think 65 lb braid will be good enough and you need just a big ggood strong hook

I recommend using a circle hook instead of a j-hook. The reason for the circle hook is most of the time the circle hook sets in the corner of the mouth, making removal easier.

80# braid. You will have more invested in line than you do in your rod and reel combo.  If you are gonna go cheap on tackle why buy expensive line?

Thanks for the quick replies. I was thinking braid so that I could fit more line on the reel and not sacrifice its strength. was just a thought. Found it cheap on ebay.
