"Cana y Carete" hosted the second, of the four scheduled, tournaments in the South Padre Island International Tournament Trail yesterday. Once again, I cannot say enough good things about this tournament and the way it is run.
The entire event is first class. The anglers are treated like family and the atmosphere is one of a kind. The guys who come up from Mexico are a blast, and the tournament staff is very professional.
Danny and I finished 3rd, William and Chicho finished 2nd, Octavio and his wife took home 1st place. Octavio was the happiest guy on the planet after catching his big redfish just a few minutes before weigh in.
We anchored on gaswell flats about a half mile east of marker 57 all day and chuncked cut bait in the ugliest brown chocolate water I have seen in a while. The wind has been stirring up the bay for three days straight. Luckily we had scouted, and we knew there were a bunch of big fish on top of gaswell flats. We caught about 20 reds with 17 of them being oversized and only three in the slot. Two of them were just under 28 inches and full of baby crabs.
Several other boats drifted by us but they were throwing lures or popping corks and did not catch anything. We had a hard time getting a trout out of there despite having caught and released several big sow trout in there during our scouting trips on Thursday and Friday. Eventually we managed an 18 inch trout, but that really hurt us in the end.
Since we had won the first event, and finished third in this event, we have managed to stay on top of the standings, but Octavio with his first place finish is closing the gap quickly. We had a TV cameraman on our boat all day, and will be featured on an upcoming showing of Cana and Carete.

Did not take any pictures but there was a film crew on my boat and there were several cameras at the awards ceremony.

I for one love competition, but I just can't compete with some of the entrants. I know of several friends and people that start pre-fishing tourneys 2 days prior to the start. big advantage, cause they can really find the fish and hone in on their location, tacktic and prefered food of choice. They know when the bite is hot and when to head deeper. Can't say that I wouldn't do the same(cause I would) just the extra time on the water would be fun with friends.

Thats what alot of tournament anglers do. If your serious about the tourney and theres big money to be won, that should be everyones game plan. You gotta put your time on the water to find'em!

I agree with on the flats on this one. Some people take tournament fishing very seriously, while others just want an excuse to fish and hang out with other fishermen.
There is alot of luck involved in winning a fishing tournament. You can really help your chances with a little pre-scouting. However, pre-fishing does not always guarantee good results. Just this past week I fished a tournament and went to a spot where the fish had been two days before. They had moved, and we were lucky to not get skunked.

Stop#3 is this weekend. To the winners of stop#1, do they pay cash for 1st place after every tourney or is it at the finale stop?

There are substantial cash prizes awarded at each event. The entry fees are very low so the payouts to entry ratio is very nice.
