I'm a frequent flyer on Continental and they allow me to bring (3) 70lbs. boxes for free. That's the best way to bring the fish back. Shipping your fish from Alaska is costly.

Notice how he was dressed in July?  I lived in Anchorage, Alaska 7 years, it got to 80 degrees twice.  We used to say there were four seasons alright, snow, mud, June 17th, mud.  Looks like a great trip.  I heard the Kenai was catch and release for salmon this year, due to low escapement.  When that started happning on the West Coast it was the beginning of the end of wild run salmon.  With all the commercial over harvest, habitat loss and general pollution of our environment, I think we have seen the last of the rivers so full of salmon that you could walk across them.

fB, you are correct, spring breakup is a messy time up there. The weather definitely did not cooperate too well this trip but that's the reason one has to go prepared for sudden temperature swings. Summertime temps in Alaska are like our winters.

Early this season the Kenai was closed to king fishing because of the low count passing though the sonar counter but as the numbers picked up they opened the river up. As far as the reds go, this year was a good one and lots and lots of people fishing and taking home their limits on Kenai and other rivers (I'm having mine smoked).....the catch and release are for rainbow trout on the Kenai.
