Judge Mills has called a special session at the Aransas County Commissioners Court for Friday 16th at 9:00 am. The topic will be to discuss the funding for Cedar Bayou and Vinson Slough. We have just about completed the CIAP grant application but need to know if the County will put up the $500,000.00 from the County CIAP fund to go with the State CIAP funds of $4.5 million. This will be for the final phase of the project, (dredging). If anyone would like to attend, please do so. I think that these commissioners need to see the supporters and you will hear for your self how things are going. I hope to see you there.

yes any update? I was down at the bay house for yard work and didn't have the time to make the meeting. Just to clarify, if they approved the $ then how many more potential steps before work would begin?

This from the CC Caller-Times
CORPUS CHRISTI — Aransas County commissioners voted unanimously Friday to earmark $500,000 to help reopen Cedar Bayou.
Opening Cedar Bayou, which will cost about $5 million, is considered critical to improving the health of the county's waterways. County commissioners set aside federal Coastal Impact Assistance Program funding to attract an additional $4.5 million in state funding.
An open natural pass between San Jose and Matagorda islands would allow easier inflow and exchange of water from the Gulf of Mexico. It also would provide access to the bays for aquatic life and would provide mating grounds for fish, shrimp and crabs among others.
Cedar Bayou was blocked in 1978 to prevent an oil spill from entering the bays and was never properly cleared out. It was dredged several times, including in 1995 when the spoils were deposited at the mouth of neighboring Vinson Slough, which further deteriorated flow.
County Judge Burt Mills said he has had recent assurances that the necessary federal and state permits will be granted.
He believes the reopening project will begin in April after endangered whooping cranes leave the area.
Commissioner Bubba Casterline said getting the long awaited project completed will be good for the tourism based economy.
"Cedar Bayou was always a really popular fishing spot and a big draw for people coming here," he said.

Happy days are just around the corner. On Friday, this county finally stepped up, something that I have been trying to get them to do for years. We laid the foundation, completed all of the ground work, and it was time for the county to step up and it did in a very big way. If it had not been for Judge Mills, I do not believe it would have happen. I am thrilled that this man saw that it is the responsibility of this County to see that those passes are open and flowing for all and not a select few. SCBI can move forward and assist the County in funding for the dredging project, which was what we wanted to do. We will continue to work with the Judge not only on the dredging, but we will assist the Judge in finding the necessary funds for monitor and maintenance of these passes, which is an important element for keeping these fish passes open. The last word that I had on the permit was that FWS is still holding up the process. Once the FWS finally complete that review, they will send it to the CORPS. It will then go to TCEQ and lastly it will go to GLO and back to the CORPS. It should not take long for all of them to submit those documents to the CORPS. Yes, as evil fish said, We are one giant step closer. Once again, I believe that if it had not been for all of you, the Angles of these passes, it would not have seen the light of day. You did it, we will at last have our passes back. I will get you all up dated as things progress, and when the passes are about to bust though to the Gulf, I hope to see as many of you over there so that you can watch as our passes breath new life to this system. God Bless you, and you will be hearing from me soon.

Great news but instead of waiting I say we get some shovels and a tug to plow it partially open now.

Way to go Lynn! Remember, Old Plugger said he thought it was genius when you turned the permit application over to the county. That's exactly what it was-genius on your part. Now, take that thread titled "Huge Mistake" and just delete the daylights out of it until it vaporizes into cyberspace! Man, I can't wait to see that first green tide come flowing through!
